Engineering scope and design basis

Clarified the tradeoff between high-throughput performance and long-term support / documentation robustness.

Compared four centrifuge suppliers across 40–50 GPM performance, solids removal, bowl size, recipe usability, turbidity-based discharge control, automation depth, documentation quality, build quality, service network, and cost.

Improved centrifuge decision quality by comparing centrifuge supplier 95% solids removal at 40 GPM and 83% at 50 GPM, the recorded centrifuge supplier 20 GPM limitation and stronger documentation/service profile, the centrifuge supplier comparison point, and the approximately 50-page versus approximately 2,000-page/13th-version documentation contrast.

95% solids removal at 40 GPM; 83% at 50 GPM; recorded 20 GPM centrifuge supplier limitation; approximately 50-page documentation concern; approximately 2,000-page/13th-version documentation reference; centrifuge supplier; centrifuge supplier reference.

Additional technical detail

  • Operating requirements and vendor commitments

Requested unattended/overnight-operation capability and critical-error standby or shutdown. Suppliers described vibration/temperature shutdown functions; a centrifuge supplier representative proposed an additional automatic-shutdown feature. The later trial report described automatic recipes with occasional operator or remote checks to detect a cycle exit. These statements do not establish that every proposed safety function was installed or validated at each site.

  • Cross-site trial comparison

Compared a centrifuge supplier report from a comparison facility of more than 2000 NTU feed to about 23 NTU outlet at 50 GPM against a Brew 250 example of 1800 NTU feed to more than 30 NTU at the same nominal flow. The comparison facility used an outlet criterion below 40 NTU at 50 GPM and had fed from a settled storage tank rather than directly from a fermenter. The comparison prompted questions about operating parameters and plate-stack differences; it was not a matched-feed experiment. The centrifuge supplier alternative was discussed at 220000 USD.

  • Trial extension and product coverage

Considered extending the rental with purchase credit while testing apple and rice wine/vinegar across sites. Product selection, available batches and the cost of moving or replacing equipment were part of the trial-to-purchase decision.

  • Diagnostic follow-up

Questioned whether the short versus long disc stack, operating speed and configuration explained the trial difference. The supplier proposed a field check and possible stack exchange.

  • Production and CIP profiling plan

Planned a site visit to sample each product through a full production and CIP cycle, coordinate plant availability and decide whether additional visits were needed to cover every product. The plan connected recipe development, filtration performance and cleaning behavior.

  • Product recipes and operating controls

Expanded operating requirements to align EBC/CU instrument output with NTU quality measurements; establish a baseline for each product/site; and use inlet/outlet turbidity with flow and discharge algorithms to adapt to changing feed. Specified production, CIP/rinse and standby modes, reduced operator intervention, safe fault response and vendor review of additional hardware/software. Optional functions included inlet/outlet trends, HMI totalization, recirculation during discharge spikes, selectable CIP, adjustable pre-discharge rinse and an HMI-operated flush-water valve. Operators needed usable adjustment criteria rather than repeated engineering determination of a color-dependent CU-to-NTU relationship.

  • Wear evaluation and service planning

Requested trial operating hours and total product volume before disconnection so the supplier could inspect the bowl and carbon seals and assess wear under the actual product mix. Supplier guidance compared outlet pressure below 120 psi with a 145 psi condition; the inspection and resulting service-life determination were still proposed.

  • Laboratory-to-plant decision sequence

Defined laboratory screening and vendor RFQ review before an onsite full-scale trial, then linked the required acceptance evidence, trial time/cost and operating results to an equipment-purchase decision.

  • Competency and project record
