Why the Work Mattered

Purpose and Operating Need

The remediation required a complete hydraulic path from roof capture to final discharge, including conveyance, sidewall / base reinforcement, debris management, energy dissipation, and downstream erosion protection.

Engineering Approach

Engineering Approach

Methods and technical scope: roof area of 175 ft x 50 ft, 6 in/hr rainfall intensity, 4,375 cu ft/hr runoff, five 4 in x 5 in downspouts, 135-ft channel, 12 in width, 18-24 in depth, 4 percent slope, #4 rebar, 4000-5000 psi concrete, 8 in stone base, stainless debris screens, five-step weir, riprap / gabion base, and outlet basin details.

Engineering scope and design basis

Improved contractor scope clarity, constructability, maintainability, and defensibility of the drainage remediation approach.

Used roof area of 175 ft x 50 ft, 6 in/hr rainfall intensity, 4,375 cu ft/hr runoff, five 4 in x 5 in downspouts, 135-ft channel, 12 in width, 18-24 in depth, 4 percent slope, #4 rebar, 4000-5000 psi concrete, 8 in stone base, stainless debris screens, five-step weir, riprap / gabion base, and outlet basin details.

Improved drainage design specificity, measured by 8,750 sq ft roof area, 545 GPM runoff, 4 percent channel slope, 5-7 ft/s target velocity, 34-degree removable debris-screen tilt, five 5-ft weir drops, and <6 ft/s outlet velocity target, by converting runoff calculations into channel, screen, weir, and basin design criteria.

8,750 sq ft roof area; 6 in/hr rainfall; 4,375 cu ft/hr runoff; 5 downspouts; 34-degree screen angle; 55-ft weir; <6 ft/s outlet target.

Project ownership and delivery context

Owned the full project lifecycle: capital planning and prioritization, need definition, feasibility and scope development, engineering and AFE justification, procurement and vendor coordination, construction sequencing and field oversight, commissioning, turnover, and post-startup support. Connected operating requirements with technical scope, funding decisions, execution readiness, and the needs of operations and maintenance.

Developed the reinforced channel, debris screens, five-step weir, outlet basin and stabilization scope. Curbing, grading, landscaping and wastewater-collection interfaces were coordinated with the work. The system reduced sediment carry by more than 90 percent while providing a maintainable runoff path.
